In January, 1941, Adolf Hitler ordered the creation of an expeditionary force to be sent to North Africa in support of the Italian troops fighting against the British in Libya. Erwin Rommel was immediately appointed for commanding this force and the newly formed DAK (Deutsches Afrikakorps ) arrived there during February and March, 1941.

Rommel saw an opportunity to further experiment and develop the Blitzkrieg tactics at the long open distances of North African desert. That spirit, united with his determination and military genius, caused a lot of problems to his British enemies, even if they normally outnumbered the DAK an were better equipped.

The defeat at El-Alamein, the opening of a second front in North Africa with the American landings of Operation Torch and the general inferiority situation in the war theater, made things more and more difficult for the German forces. In May 1943, the remnants of the DAK and the rest of the Axis forces in Africa surrendered to the Allies.

Our miniature portray an average private from an Infantry regiment, advancing in a coordinated assault along the tanks. He wears a tropical uniform, the classic webbing kit associated with the DAK and two canteens, a common practice for those soldiers, used to fight under the scorching heat of the desert.

Special thanks to Xavier Ruiz for assembling and painting a section of an 1/24 Tasca’s Pz kpfw II for decorating the terrain.
